Video Tryout Instructions and Checklist

E-mail Print
The CSU Northridge Cheerleading program is a Division One Small CO-ED competitive cheerleading team. We are looking for individuals who can compete at the highest division in the nation. Our cheerleaders are student athletes and need to balance their studies with all their cheerleading activities. Regular workout schedules outside of cheerleading practices are mandatory to stay physically fit.

All cheerleaders must tryout for the team every year. We offer this video tryout option for athletes who cannot attend a tryout. In person tryouts are the best way to get maximum points. We will score your video in 6 different areas, fight song, cheers, dance, stunts, tumbling, and interview. Below are dates and instruction for you video submission.

You must be accepted into CSUN previous to tryout to be chosen.

Format:

YouTube it.

How to film

Please keep the camera rolling on stunts and standing tumbling skills. Do two of the same stunt that you are showing while the camera is running. Do the same with standing tumbling.

Stunts and Standing tumbling.

While the camera is rolling execute a straight up stretch full down or the more difficult full up stretch double down, upon cradle take a breath, shake off the gitters, and attempt another one. If you have a more difficult stunt you want to show us, stop the camera, take a break, and then attempt the more difficult stunt, make sure you keep the camera rolling and do that stunt twice.

For standing tumbling we are looking specifically for tumbling connections, toe touch back tuck or back handspring. A standing back handspring back tuck is a nice connection also. If your tumbling skills are not your best activity then try our jump sequence. All of the suggested tumbling skills are demonstrated online. Do your hardest skill twice while the camera is rolling.

Running tumbling

If you are doing a tumbling pass it must be more than just a round off back handspring. A good guideline would be make sure you have 3 tricks within your pass starting with the round-off (1). Ex. Round off (1) back handspring(2) back tuck (3)  is acceptable. Please only give us your most difficult pass. Make sure the pass is more “clean” than “difficult”.

Fight song, Cheers, and Dance

Feel free to stop the tape as you do each of these. DO NOT do these more than once. Only one time is sufficient, but please do each of the cheers and do the dance to music. All of this material is featured in online videos please duplicate. We are looking for crisp, clean, sharp motions and attention to detail.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to do each of these sections to the best of your ability. There is no reason to rush through all of this. Since you have ample time to put your video together, we will be judging you much harder on cleanliness and execution of the material.

Interview

Answer the following questions in your interview:
  1. How long have you been cheering for? (What teams, where, did you compete?)
  2. Why would you be a good Northridge cheerleader?
  3. Why are you going to college? (what will you be studying?)
  4. Are you applying to any other schools or teams?
  5. What is the most important quality of a Collegiate Cheerleader and why?
Your interview should NOT be more than 5 mins long, but please take time to answer the questions completely. Do not write down your answers and read them. Feel free to prepare what you are going to say but your answers should look natural.

Tips

Make sure you look like a cheerleader (hair and makeup). There is a distinct difference between the way that all-star cheerleaders and college cheerleaders look, so please attempt the college look (less is more). Please wear Northridge colors: red, black, gray, or white for your video. Connect with us on facebook.com/csuncheer where we will be messaging any updates to our tryouts.
